I recently wrote to the University of Miami philosophy department asking when, if ever, the ban on my visiting the campus would be lifted (I live five minutes from there). I also asked what the reason for the ban was. I got no reply. Then I wrote offering to make a donation to the department in honor of Ed Erwin, to be awarded to a deserving graduate student. I got no reply. I wonder what would happen if I offered to give the department a million dollars no questions asked.
With that last line, I think you might have something there. Reminds me of a quote a past history professor attributed to Bob Dylan: “Money doesn’t talk, it screams.” However, fact-checking this just now, I discovered Dylan didn’t actually say that. Regarding the ban, what if you were to get a petition signed by thousands of people urging that the ban be lifted?
That would be a good idea, if only I could be bothered. No one in the department would sign it for reasons that are perhaps obvious.
