    Dear Colin McGinn,
Throughout my life, I have never drawn someone I did not genuinely wish to draw. This drawing is one of the rare works I have made. I have learned a great deal from you, and for this reason I created it as a gift and as a gesture of respect. I sincerely thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn from you, in a way very much like that between a teacher and a student.

    With my respect,
    Uğur Polat

    Dear Colin,

Yes, I included the hand deliberately. One reason was your interest in the hand and my wish to allude directly to Prehension, which I see as an essential complement to your work. The clue lies both in the book and in the etymology of “prehension” itself. But more importantly, I thought your hand would form a very strong pair with your face. Because two friends (that is, the mind and the hand) are very successful accomplices in grasping the mysteries of the world.

    Best regards,
    Uğur

Mr Polat with this sympathetic rendering of Mr Colin Mcginn, the world renowned philosopher and teacher, gives us mediated psychological insight into his subject. With a sure and seemingly effortless competence the artist, through adroit handling and spare simple use of medium, gives us a striking image indeed: The eyes in particular convey a sense of relaxed attention, even as they seem to gaze half-distractedly into an unseen middle distance, inviting the viewer to speculate on the sitters present thought. The hand, always difficult to get right in drawing, is shown in a timeless position and gesture evoking the classical; the forefinger extended, directing the viewers eye toward the temple area, perhaps as metaphor of the duality of the physical and pictorial exterior, and the imagined interiority of unknown insubstantiality. The portrait succeeds also on the purely aesthetic level. We are never left in any doubt that we see an image caught in time of a real, living human being. The etched facial lines of age carrying their messages of common human feeling, echoing and marking life’s indelible imprint. A remarkable achievement.

This is very perceptive: a lot of thought went into that “sketch”. The hand-eye relation is particularly telling. It combines the inner and outer into a higher unity.

I would even say that it immortalizes me and what I stand for. It also acts as a reproof to those who wished to destroy me with their lurid lack of imagination and sheer philistinism.
